I didn’t know it until she died, but my nana was a prolific photographer. I scanned 9,000 photos of hers over the summer and didn’t even make it through all of them. It was really hard, but I narrowed it down to about a hundred of my favorites for this photography book.

As a branding project, I had to create a brand based off of a physical location. I chose my favorite bench at the park near my apartment. For this project, I created a poster, gif, postcard, and merch mockups.

Catholic Guilt Cathedral

This project was made in New Art City, a website that allows users to build complex 3-dimensional spaces online. I constructed a sort of Cathedral made from panels of collages, childhood photos, Adobe Stock religious art, and free-to-use 3d modeled objects. Ambient music plays softly as you walk through the space, and as you walk between the pews, a short clip of me as a baby plays where you can hear my mother calling out to me in a sweet, high voice. I wanted to invite viewers into a physical representation of my past.

Scraps is a compilation of collages I’ve done over the past two years that feel related to my  thesis. The four pillars of my thesis are Catholicism, childhood, womanhood, and family. I’ve chosen collages that touch on at least one of these topics.

I did a class branding project centered on Sundance Film Festival. For this project, I created a logo bumper, an invitation gif, and a 30 second reel advertising the event. All animations made in Adobe After Effects.

My thesis concept is “Girlhood and Godhood”. This body of work centers on nostalgia and religious guilt, reflecting a strange, queer little girl’s upbringing in the Catholic Church.

Memory Shrine is an installation that explores my mixed emotions on my religious upbringing. This piece communicates both the comfort of familiarity and the anxiety of existential dread. I reference happy childhood moments through calico critters and dollhouse furniture. The religious paraphernalia and photography is meant to convey my misgivings about my Catholic childhood. I attempt to blend the joy and the fear together. An empty pill bottle sits in a doll-sized rocking chair, and a toy dog prays before a shrine Mary. The impact of Catholicism on my childhood was both beautiful and scary. As a child, I took solace in the concept of a benevolent God protecting me. However, the concepts of sin and eternal damnation weighed heavy on me.
